Interesting Differences between Sand Casting and Investment Casting

 In blog

Sand casting and investment casting are two popular casting manufacturing techniques that have a long history in human civilization. In both these methods moulted metals are poured into a mold to make certain type of metal parts. Though they seem similar in nature, there are many significant differences between these two procedures. The way a professional Investment Casting Manufacturer in West Bengal works is totally different from the work process of sand casting manufacturers.

What is Sand Casting?

Sand casting, as the name suggests, compacts sand around the molds or the models of the final product. This will create a sand model of that product. In most cases, sand is mixed with clay and left a little moistened with water to create a tough mold.

These sand molds are for one-time uses. However, you can reuse the sand to create another mold for next production. There are two halves to create a mold. These two halves are fastened closely to create the complete mold for use.

What is Investment Casting?

In investment casting, wax is used to create a void or pattern in the shape of the object one wants to create. A refractory ceramic material is used to coat this wax pattern. Once the material gets hardened, that wax mold is turned upside-down. Now, it is heated so that the wax can melt down and drains out slowly. Then, you can get an expandable investment mold with the help of that hardened ceramic pattern.

Now, it is the time to pour molten metal into that mold to get a metal part in desired shape and size. Then after sometime, that molten metal gets hard and you can get the desired product. You can reuse that wax for next casting.

  • Individual casting of metal parts

Sand casting involves 5 casting procedures:
